Summer 1917

25th April - 24th September 1917

Between the 25th April (upon which date the gallant Die-Hards, having suffered grievous losses in the Second Battle of the Scarpe, coming out of the line with only 8 officers and 230 other ranks) and the 23rd September there is little to record of outstanding interest concerning the 1st Middlesex. The Battalion, on the former date, reached Grosville, and until early in May were out of the line, absorbing drafts, training and getting ready for the next battle. At the end of July the Battalion entrained at Pont Remy for Adinkerke, and in August went into trenches in the St. George's sector, east of Nieupoort. On 1st September a move was made to Moulle, thence on 15th to Nord Peene. On 20th the Battalion, being then billeted in Roukieshelle, moved off at 4.30 am. through Berthen, Hensken and Reninghelst to Alberta Camp.
