Middlesex Battle Honour, Albuhera

The battle of Albuhera was fought on Thursday 16th May 1811. It is said to be the bloodiest battle that took place during the Peninsular War.

Much like the statistics of the Great War, sources vary on the subject of losses and whether the battle was "won" by Wellington's side or Napoleon's, but the 57th Regiment of Foot (West Middlesex) that later became the 1st Battalion, Middlesex Regiment was in a brigade that suffered losses on a proportional scale that exceeded even bloody battles in the Great War.

During the battle, Colonel Inglis was severely wounded with grapeshot, he refused to be removed to the rear and remained with the colours. Even though dying, he was heard calmly repeating "Die-Hard 57th, Die-Hard". Henceforth the Middlesex became known as the Die-Hards.
